The state of refugees in Ethiopia

 In the end of 2009, the government of Ethiopia, in collaboration with UNHCR, WFP and other humanitarian organizations rendered protection and assistance in its twelve camp sites to over 133,000 refugees from Somalia (59,713), Eritrea (45,209), Sudan (24,084) and Kenya (2,845).

There are also urban refugees from various countries in Africa and the Middle East living in Addis Ababa.

The number of refugees in Ethiopia has shown an increase by 8,347 compared to end of 2008 figures. The Table below shows the number of refugees as at end of 2008 and 2009 by countries of origin.

 

 

*There are more than 160,000 un registered and self supporting Somali refugees living in Addis Ababa and other towns.
