The state of refugees in Ethiopia

 In the end of 2009, the government of Ethiopia, in collaboration with UNHCR, WFP and other humanitarian organizations rendered protection and assistance in its twelve camp sites to over 133,000 refugees from Somalia (59,713), Eritrea (45,209), Sudan (24,084) and Kenya (2,845).

Durable Solutions

In 2009,a total of 960 Sudanese refugees have returned to their areas of origin from Pugnido and Sherkole refugee camps in the west to South Sudan in safety and dignity bringing the total number of repatriates to over 36,000 during the past three years.

Need For An Improved Assistance To Refugees In Ethiopia

Given the current refugees in Ethiopia, ARRA requires support from UNHCR, donors and concerned humanitarian agencies in order to provide protection and assistance according to international standards.

New Influx of Refugees In To Ethiopia

The flow of refugees into Ethiopia kept increasing due to the prevailing human right violations in Eritrea and the civil unrest in Somalia. Consequently, several refugees from Somalia and Eritrea have continued to seek asylum in Ethiopia.
