The Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) is the government arm responsible for the implementation of refugee protection and assistance activities in Ethiopia.

Vision Of ARRA

The safety and security of refugees during their stay in Ethiopia and durable solutions to their problems through voluntary repatriation to their respective countries of origin in safety and dignity and their resettlement to other countries.

 

The state of refugees in Ethiopia

 In the end of 2009, the government of Ethiopia, in collaboration with UNHCR, WFP and other humanitarian organizations rendered protection and assistance in its twelve camp sites to over 133,000 refugees from Somalia (59,713), Eritrea (45,209), Sudan (24,084) and Kenya (2,845).

  • Conduct registration of eligible asylum seekers qualifying for international protection and assistance.
  • provide protection and assistance to refugees until durable solutions are found to their problems;

New Influx of Refugees In To Ethiopia

The flow of refugees into Ethiopia kept increasing due to the prevailing human right violations in Eritrea and the civil unrest in Somalia. Consequently, several refugees from Somalia and Eritrea have continued to seek asylum in Ethiopia.
